Abstract

================================================================================================
The development of material engineering technology is growing very rapidly. Many research and experiments have been carried out in order to create a material with better mechanical properties and is environmentally friendly. One of them is a new material which has good friction ability but does not neglect the strength of the material. This material will later be developed as a material used in the automotive industry, one of which is an alternative to brake pads.
In a material that is in contact with another material it will cause friction force, the friction force itself is categorized into two, namely static and kinetic friction. The change in friction from static to kinetic is called stick-slip friction. In the area where the stick-slip friction occurs, the value of the friction force that occurs has the greatest value, so that the stick-slip friction phenomenon affects the service life of a material. In this final project, an experimental study will be carried out on the effect of adding magnesium carbonate material to the coefficient of friction that occurs in bamboo fibers and silica powder as reinforcement.

Based on the research that has been done, the friction coefficient increases with the addition of magnesium carbonate concentration. At a concentration of 16% without silica, 8% with 12% silica, 10% with 10% and 12% with 8% silica have static friction coefficient values of 0.65, 0.43, 0.67 and 0.72, respectively. while for the kinetic friction coefficient 0.63, 0.41, 0.54 and 0.62, respectively. This value is generated at the loading variation of 1kg. This value changes when the load variation is increased by 2kg, that is, the μs data is obtained respectively 0.65, 0.59, 0.61 and 0.67 while μk data is obtained respectively 0.63, 0.49, 0.51 and 0.61. And the hardness increases as the concentration of silica powder is added with the highest hardness value of 76.4 HD. This value is average of the value tested at 5 random surface points of each test object with a composition of 12% silica + 8% magnesium and 20% bamboo fiber with epoxy resin adhesive
