Abstract

======================================================================================================
Rims are components found on two- or four-wheeled vehicles that function as a place for tires to attach and support the load acting on the vehicle. In general, the rear rims components on the market today, especially on two-wheeled vehicles, are connected to an axle that is directly connected to the engine. However, for the type of two-wheeled vehicle driven by a BLDC (Brushless Direct Current) motor, commonly referred to as an electric scooter, the rim's design will be slightly different from conventional rims. The electric scooter uses an IWM (In-Wheel Motor) drivetrain system.
This final project research focuses on designing the rims components and choosing the right type of material and easy to get. After the design process is complete, a simulation of static and dynamic loading is carried out using the finite element method with the help of the ANSYS 2019 software. For static loading, a static structural analysis is carried out assuming the rims receive the maximum load in the form of the weight of the scooter and two passengers. In dynamic loading, modal analysis is carried out to determine the natural frequency of the rims coupled to the In-wheel motor (IWM) and then proceed with harmonic response analysis by providing input in the form of variations in the unbalance mass on the rims of 0.03 kg, 0.04 kg, and 0.05 kg and input due to base excitation from road contours using International Roughness Index (IRI) type 6 road standards to see the vibration response in the form of deflection to the frequency and stress received.
The simulation results obtained deformation values of 0.02 mm on Al-6061 rims and 0.04 mm on magnesium alloy rims when given static loading. While the maximum equivalent stress value obtained is the same, namely 29.842 MPa. In the modal analysis simulation, three modes of shape were obtained from each rims material, with the lowest natural frequency of 365.84 Hz for Al-6061 rims and 398.77 Hz on magnesium alloy rims. In the dynamic loading test, when the rims drive-in road conditions with the International Roughness Index (IRI) type 6 standard at a speed of 40 km/hour (8 Hz), the equivalent stress values obtained are 51.3 MPa and 47.9 MPa for the rims. With the type of material Al-6061 and magnesium alloy. At the same time, the deflection that occurs for both types of material is 30 mm. For the next dynamic loading test, by giving unbalance mass variations on the rims based on the ISO 1940-1 standard when the wheel rotates at 500 rpm, the maximum equivalent stress value is 2.37 MPa on the type of material Al-6061 and magnesium alloy. From these various tests, the safety factor (SF) value is more significant than one, so that it can be categorized as a safe design when going through static and dynamic loading.
