Abstract

HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) is a polyethylene thermoplastic which is produced by a catalytic process and has little branching. HDPE has stronger intermolecular strength and greater tensile strength than LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene). This makes difficult for microorganisms to access the polymer chain. The impact of using HDPE intensively can pose a threat to the environment, because almost products derived from HDPE are difficult to degrade. Biodegradation is a process by which microorganisms are able to break down natural polymers and synthetic polymers (such as polyethylene and polystyrene). This study aims to explore marine yeast from various coastal areas on the coast of Banyuwangi, Surabaya and Gresik in degrading HDPE. The biodegradation test was carried out for 30 days on Mineral Salt Medium Broth (MSMB) with HDPE plastic pieces. Parameters of biodegradation results include dry weight plastic (%) and the amount of yeast (CFU/ml). The results obtained 4 isolates that have the potential to degrade HDPE from coastal areas.
