Abstract

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-P) were synthesized via the polyol method as a photocatalytic material for the removal of the methylene blue solutions. The polyol method was carried out using diethylene glycol (DEG) as a solvent. Synthesis was carried out with h ratio = 5, b ratio = 1, and z ratio = 0,5 mol/L. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-P) were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and UV-Diffuse Reflectance (UV-DRS). The characterization results showed that ZnO-P nanoparticles were successfully synthesized with hexagonal crystal structure, spherical particles shape, particle size around 40-100 nm, particle aggregation formed, and the band gap energy (Eg) is 3.2 eV. Zinc oxide nanoparticles were tested for their photocatalytic activity for the removal of methylene blue at solution concentration of 20 mg/L under UV-LED irradiation. The biggest methylene blue concentration removal by zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-P) was 98,00% with a time of 50 minutes under UV-LED irradiation. The removal of methylene blue efficiency test of two different zinc oxide synthesis methods is also presented in this research.
