Abstract

Ground fault is one of the disturbances that can initiate the occurrence of transient phenomena. This transient phenomenon can cause damage to electrical equipment such as transformers. When the transient occurs, the equipment can be damaged due to overvoltage or oscillating voltage over the wide frequency range. This study will analyze the failure of the Generator Step-Up Transformer at Unit 7 PLTU Paiton by observing the recording of the Digital Fault Recorder installed on the system. To clarify the analysis, a failure simulation was carried out in the ATP-EMTP software to determine the shape and magnitude of the transient voltage at the high-voltage side of the transformer and its fourier shape. After being simulated, the transient voltage that occurs shows high oscillations so that it has high peak voltage in several harmonic orders on phase B. The magnitude of the peak voltage during the transient causes damage to coils 27 & 28 in the high-voltage winding phase B of the transformer because it exceeds the allowable voltage per coil value. From the simulation, it was found that the transient voltage that occurs due to ground faults causes damage to the coil in the winding of one phase of the transformer because of non-uniform voltage distribution in the windings.
