Abstract

======================================================================================================
Indonesia is a country that is making improvements from various sectors, one of which is in the chemical industry such as the petrochemical industry. One of the raw materials in the petrochemical industry is ammonium sulfate and currently the domestic demand for ammonium sulfate is quite large. The raw materials for the manufacture of ammonium sulfate include gypsum, a by-product of the FGD PLTU, CO2, NH3, and H2SO4. The capacity of the ammonium sulfate plant to be established in 2025 is 720,000 tons/year. The location chosen for the establishment of this factory is in the Buluminung Industrial Estate in North Penajam Paser Regency, East Kalimantan. The process of making ammonium sulfate uses the Merseburg Process which consists of six stages. The first stage, namely the carbonation stage, aims to react NH3 gas with CO2 into liquid ammonium carbonate. The second stage, namely the reaction stage, aims to react ammonium carbonate with gypsum into ammonium sulfate and produce a by-product in the form of lime (CaCO3). The third stage is the filtration stage, which functions to separate lime CaCO3 and liquid ammonium sulfate. The next stage is the neutralization stage, which serves to neutralize the excess NH3 and ammonium carbonate by adding sulfuric acid. The fifth stage is the evaporation and crystallization stage, aiming to evaporate the water in the ZA solution until the solution becomes concentrated and proceed to the crystallization process until crystals are formed. The last stage is the drying stage, which aims to dry the ZA crystals using a rotary dryer and cool the ZA crystals from the centrifuge so that the product is obtained according to the desired moisture content. This factory is planned to work continuously for 300 days/year on a 24 hour/day basis. Gypsum raw materials needed are 497,052.46 kg/day, NH3 100,339.76 kg/day, CO2 129,646.66 kg/day, and H2SO4 5,662.97 kg/day. In this ammonium sulfate plant, we optimize by replacing the gas-solid separator in the form of a cyclone with an electrostatic precipitator. The electrostatic precipitator can achieve up to 99% efficiency, which was originally 85% of that of a cyclone. The economic analysis obtained in this calculation is the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 26.36%, Minimum Pay Out Time (POT) before tax is 1.91 years and after tax is 3.33 years, Net Present Value (NVP) amounted to Rp294,496,887,224, Shut Down Point (SDP) was 48%, and Break Event Point (BEP) was 53.4%.
