Abstract

Navigation systems are one of the main focus in the development of autonomous robots. Self-localization is a prerequisite for the robot to carry out its supposed duties. Autonomous Ground Vehicles generally used for transportation, surveying hazardous locations, or doing repetitive heavy work. Known navigation system with dead reckoning methods such as the Inertial Navigation System (INS) have major problem with error accumulation over time. To overcome this problem, the use of camera or Lidar as an external reference is very suitable to be applied in an indoor environment. In this Final Project, a navigation system with combination of Wheel Odometry and Lidar Scan Matching using Iterative Closest Point is built to be used for ABU Robocon 2021, a robot contest between universities in Asia Pacific Region. Iterative Closest Point is one of the popular scan matching method for Lidar point cloud, which is simple but have a quite high accuracy. The integration is done using the Extended Kalman Filter. Wheel Odometry raw position would be used as base transformation for Lidar Point Cloud, so iteration needed on ICP would be decreased. ICP matching result between Lidar data and reference map would then be used as measurement data input for EKF. Wheel Odometry raw position would also used as position input for EKF when data from Lidar is unavailable. Position estimation result from EKF would come out as an system output for time t, and also used as a prediction input for time t+1. From the test result of the experiment carried out, the integration of the navigation system with scan matching using Lidar point cloud can overcome the problem of error accumulation which is the main problem of the Inertial Navigation System. After being used for ten minutes, gyro compass shows angle error around 3°, while the proposed navigation system can consistently hold the angle error under 0.7°.
