Abstract

================================================================================================ Population growth and the rate of urbanization in Indonesia have encouraged most cities in Indonesia to adapt by changing urban development patterns from horizontal to vertical. However, this vertical development inadvertently has a negative impact on the social life of people who live in vertical format buildings. One of the reasons for this is because the context of communal space in vertical format buildings, especially high-rise residential buildings, is less able to meet the needs of the social context of the community when compared to the horizontal format environment. The 3 main advantages of communal space in a horizontal format compared to a vertical format are access, individuality, and hierarchy of spaces. Kampung in Surabaya is an example of a settlement built in a horizontal format. Kampung is considered to have a communal space context that is right for the social life of the community. Therefore, the notion emerged to bring the context of the kampung’s communal spaces into a high-rise residential building by designing a high-rise residential building that adapted the attributes of access, individuality, and hierarchy of the kampung’s communal space. The purpose of this design is to create a high-rise residential building context that can meet the needs of the social context for building occupants by adapting the context of kampung’s communal space.
