Abstract

The church is one of the public spaces affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. After the enactment of the new normal, public spaces including places of worship have begun to be allowed to reopen. But apparently, not all churches have been reopened to be used as before. Churches that have opened offline worship also cannot operate optimally because the essence of worship together in the church is not felt.
This is inseparable from the effect of social restrictions in the form of distance restrictions and quotas on a public space. A place is not just a container but is tied to its users which here is a place of worship that has a strong attachment between users and places. This problem also occurs because the existing designs and facilities do not support the holding of worship with the new regulations.
Based on the above phenomenon, an architectural response is needed in the form of a new design for the church. This design uses the approach of sacral and regionalism as a response in dealing with the needs of the space that has undergone a new adjustment. Regionalism is used as a response to identify the type of church, which is Greja Kristen Jawi Wetan (GKJW). The method used is to take the essential essence of the two conditions, church and pandemic, and then integrate them and form a new unified design.
