Abstract

The background of this final project is due to the increasing use of diesel engines, the resulting NOx emissions will also increase. The addition of water to fuel can be the answer to reducing NOx emissions from combustion. The addition of water to biodiesel can't be done directly, therefore, it is necessary to add a surfactant. The production of surfactants in Indonesia is still limited, so it has a high selling price, and the surfactants that are traded today still have a detrimental effect on the environment. In this study, we will discuss the use of lerak fruit as a natural surfactant. The purpose of this final project is to obtain the substitution of natural surfactant in the water emulsion process in fuel and to determine its effect on emissions and engine performance. The analysis carried out includes the analysis of NOx and diesel engine performance with the experimental method on the engine Yanmar TF 85 MH. From the experimental results, the emulsion fuel obtained with the most stable condition has a comparative composition, namely B30 84% + 10% water + 3% natural surfactant + Span 80 & Tween 80 3%. In a previous study, the use of synthetic surfactants was 6% without the use of natural surfactants. So that the use of natural surfactants can replace 50% of the use of synthetic surfactants. For SFOC from emulsion fuel, it is better than B30 at 43.9 gr/kWh. For power, emulsion fuel is 0.1 kW better than Dexlite, and 0.03 kW better than B30. In the NOx emission test results, the use of emulsion fuel can reduce NOx emissions when compared to B30 fuel, which is about 20,9%.
