Abstract

The increasing demand of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in various applications has pushed the maturity of this technology even further through sustainable development. In many cases, a good performance with a reasonable price is the most concern in today's market. One of the important UAV characteritic is the stability, basically the stability of the aircraft can be determined in two terms; naturally and forcefully. Natural stability of the aircraft is heavily relied on the geometric of the aircraft thus eventually determined its aerodynamic characteristic. On the other hand, a force stability typically used a complex electromechanical system which is more expensive. Based on that, a practical optimization based on wing geometries parameters of Chord Tip (CT) and offset has been done to the existing UAV Cessna 182. The natural stability of the aircraft can be evaluated based on several term such as; CM-α short period, roll damping, and dutch roll mode.
The initial stability data was calculated numerically according to Chord Tip (CT) and offset variation using XFLR5. Furthermore, the collected data is use to train the neural network architecture which is in this case we used the back-propagation neural network (BPNN). The aim for this training process is to obtain a mathematical relationship between the input and output parameters. The accuracy of BPNN was evaluated through mean square of error (MSE) in each reaspective train process. The result showed an average error of 2.08376×10^(-7) which impresively accurate. The relationship model from BPNN is also presented in form of response surfaces, to help locate the maximum-or minimum value of the response as a fucntion of their parameters.
A preliminary optimum parameters from the 3D respon surface can be evaluated numerically using genetic algorithm. The optimal value of Chord Tip (CT) and offset based on their required optimum responses was confirmed at 160 and 93 respectively. Finnaly the optimum wing performance was assessed based on two different numerical techniques. The aerodynamic performance was evaluated through CFD model using FLUENT and stability was evaluated using XFLR5. The result showed, the aerodynamic performance of the new optimized wing has no a significant improvement compare to the exsisting ones. However, the new optimized wing far more superior in term of stability performance.
