Abstract

Sediment compaction due to extraction groundwater, self–weight consolidation, and monitoring the land settlement of the river delta by geodetic measurement has been executed in several studies, while sediment settlement in the estuary is hypothesized due to dynamic loads. The present study is aimed to observe the occurrence clues of sediment settlement due to loading variation and deposit layer characteristics in the estuary. The research is based on four dynamic loading data to examine, i.e., hydraulic head pressure, water density, sediment transport, newly sediment deposition. The hydraulic head has been simulated during a two-season period, i.e., the rainy and the dry season included before and after the Sembayat Weir was constructed. Water density and sediment transport were observed in the field and the laboratory for over a year. Sediment deposition was analyzed based on the sediment transport observation at two cross-sections of the same river channel. Sediment settlement was observed at BH2 and BH3 located before and after the Lewean and Turi River branches, and the width is 180 m and 80 m, respectively. This review found evidence that dynamic loads predominated maximum pressure changes at BH2 and BH3 were due to river discharge and tidal occurrence, respectively. The dynamic load of sediment at BH2 contributed higher than BH3 that almost non-existent. Looking at sediment layer characteristics, BH2 and BH3 settled in a month and two weeks for 2 mm and 8 mm settlements, respectively. Despite insignificant loading changes, these findings can better understand the loading criteria and sediment settlement on the different geometric locations.
