Abstract

The company always strives to survive and compete in the midst of intense competition. Some of the efforts made by the company to reduce operating expenses are tax evasion. When the company avoids tax, it will reduce the amount of cash outflow because there is a reduced tax liability and the company's profit will increase. Furthermore, the funds that should be used to pay taxes can be allocated through other company activities, in this case investment. Investments made by the company must also be efficient. Making investment efficiency means that the company reduces asymmetric information caused by tax avoidance. Investor's perception of the company's ability to increase profits is through the cost of equity. This study aims to determine the effect of tax avoidance on the cost of equity with investment efficiency as a mediation. Data processing uses panel data regression on 335 annual companies listed on the IDX with non-financial companies and the 2016-2018 period of observation. Testing the mediating variable using the Sobel test. The results of this study are tax avoidance on the cost of equity does not have a significant effect. However, tax avoidance will have a positive effect on investment efficiency. Investment efficiency has a negative effect on the cost of equity but not significant. So that tax avoidance has no significant effect on the cost of equity and investment efficiency cannot mediate the relationship between the two variables.
