Abstract

================================================================================================
Air Pre Heater (APH) is an important equipment contained in a power plant
that uses Pulverized Coal. The disruption that occurred at APH Adipala Power
Plant from 2016 to 2020 is quite large, namely there are 31 cases where most of
the disruption comes from APH Rotors that have stalled or failed to operate. This
research aims to find out the deformation phenomenon of rotor APH causing motor
jams by using CFD and FEA simulations so that from the deformation data is used
to evaluate alternative solutions available in the market.
The different thing in this study compared to previous research is in the
simulation of APH rotor deformation during a jam event, where not many plants
experience a jammed APH rotor condition like this. The method used in the study
there are 4 stages, the first stage is computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation
to determine the temperature distribution and then the temperature distribution is
used for load distribution in static structures in finite element analysis (FEA), the
second stage is the retrieval of actual operation data for simulation validation, The
third stage is to simulate operating data when the APH rotor is stuck and perform
mathematical calculations to determine the friction power of the rotor. The last
stage is to simulate a flexible radial seal when there is a disturbance and financial
review of the installation of flexible radial seal. The input parameters of this
simulation are Temperature and Flow of Flue Gas, Primary Air and Secondary Air,
while the output parameter is the magnitude of the deformation / expansion of the
rotor and temperature flue gas outlet cold element.
The results obtained in this study are deformation, friction force and friction
power the highest occurred when the load of 540MW APH was impaired, where the
percentage increased 81.9% compared to the maximum load of 629MW. Factors
that affect friction power are not only deformation but also force reaction from the
increase in the concentration of flue gas mass in the internal APH. The increase in
the mass of the gas flue occurs due to the decrease in flue gas outlet pressure caused
by the leak of the cold end side radial seal. The result of flexible radial seal
application can reduce friction power from 17.82KW to 3.65KW. Financial studies
show that a CBA feasible of 556% means that flexible radial seals are feasible to
install.
