Abstract

================================================================================================
Low-quality coal or lignite has dominated the use of steam power plants in recent years. Compared to good quality bituminous types, lignite is more popular because it is easy to obtain and cheaper. The consequences due to the use of lignite, which causes many problems began to be mitigated by reducing the moisture content using a coal dryer. The current coal dryer is deemed uneconomical because it uses energy sources that are still useful, such as turbine extraction steam, electric heaters, and exhaust gas using large-powered fans. For that, we need another alternative to the use of waste energy, In this case, is boiler blowdown water. This water is discharged from the Boiler to maintain water and steam quality in a closed power plant cycle.
The use of blowdown as a coal dryer will be investigated in the type of rotary coal dryer. The compressed air will absorb the heat from the blowdown through the steam coil. Furthermore, the hot air will mix with the coal in the rotary drum. For optimal results, a rotary drum with tilt angles of 0°, 10°, 20°, 30°, 40°, 50°, 60°, 70°, 80°, and 90° will be carried out. The research steps were designing, preliminary modeling, numerical analyzing, prototyping, and experimental performing.
The result shows that the moisture content has decreased significantly, within an angle of 10°. Based on an economic assessment, this coal dryer also proves that dried lignite coal has more monetary value, 6.8%, than bituminous coal.
