Abstract

The difficulty of getting clean water is currently a problem in many areas, so it is necessary to have alternative technologies that can utilize untreated water into water that suitable for consumption. Desalination is an effective method to converting water (sea water, brackish water, river) into fresh water. One of the technologies is Capacitive Deionization (CDI), which is an alternative technology for desalination, especially brackish water, which has high efficiency and requires low costs. In principle, inside the CDI reactor, there will be an attractive and repulsive forces between the ions contained in the sample water. Positive ions will stick to the negative electrode and negative ions will stick to the positive electrode. It will produce water containing a small amount of ionic solution and suitable for consumption. Several factors that affect the performance of CDI reactor are the electrode material, voltage that applied, flow rate of the solution, concentrations of ions in the solution, the duration of the desalination, temperature of the solution, the distance between the electrodes, and the number of electrode pairs.
In this study, the variables used were the applied voltage, the shape and distance of the electrodes, and the time required for the desalination process. Variations in the voltages are 2V, 12V, and 24V. Then, the shape of electrodes are cylindrical and plate forms, while the variation of the distance between electrodes are 1 cm and 5 cm. In addition, the time variables used in the desalination process are 0 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and 15 minutes. In carrying out this research, the efficiency of salinity removal in the CDI reactor which is operated in batch and continuous operation will be also determined.
Based on the results of research and analysis using ANOVA at 5% of confidence level, shape of electrodes, voltage, and distance of the electrodes did not have a significant effect on the efficiency of salinity removal with P-value 0.164, 0.452, and 0.139. Meanwhile, the shape and distance of the electrodes had significant effect on the conductivity removal efficiency with P-value 0.00 and 0.037. Voltage had no significant effect at a P-value 0.322, but 24V had the best effect on conductivity removal efficiency. In addition, the efficiency of removal salinity and conductivity in the batch system gave better results than the continuous system.
