Abstract

Sesuai dengan pernyataan Major General Julian S. Hatcher, a U.S. Army ordnance expert.

A composite material is made from two or more different materials. The purpose of the use of composites is to obtain better mechanical properties than those of constituent materials. In this studies used epoxy matrix with reinforcement in the form of hollow glass microsphere and carbon fiber. A bulletproof vest to function as impact energy absorbers derived from bullet fire. Manufacturer of bulletproof vests lighter and can absorb impact energy well is expected, it is to support the mobility and safety of its users.
In the present world, analysis of bullet-proof vests made of epoxy matrix composites with reinforcement in the form of hollow glass microsphere and carbon fiber through simulation with finite element method. Simulations conducted in accordance with national institute of justice standard 0101.06 from the U.S. department of justice, where the initial velocity of the bullet 426 m / s for the category IIIA class weapon with a kinetic energy of a bullet at 528,37 Joules. The simulation was performed by varying the thickness of bulletproof vests to obtain optimal thickness. Having obtained the optimum thickness of bulletproof vest, then with experimental verification will be performed to validate the simulation results.
The simulation results in a thickness of 20 mm is capable of absorbing energy at 348.27 Joule bullets and kinetic energy is transmitted into the body of 138, 77 Joule with penetrsi depth of 5,54 mm, which means that the energy transmitted to the body is smaller than 170 Joules. In accordance with the statement of Major General Julian S. Hatcher, a U.S. Army ordnance expert.
