Abstract

Beberapa masalah terjadi pada konstruksi di atas lapisan clay shale yang
diakibatkan oleh investigasi awal yang kurang tepat. Parameter yang dipakai
dalam perencanaan tidak memperhitungkan perubahan karakteristik akibat
penggalian dan pelapukan yang terjadi pada clay shale. Penelitian ini bertujuan
untuk mempelajari pengaruh perubahan kadar air terhadap karakteristik fisik,
mekanik dan dinamik clay shale dengan proses pembasahan dan pengeringan.
Clay shale diambil dari area penambangan PT. Semen Indonesia di Desa
Meliwang, Kecamatan Kerek, Kabupaten Tuban.
Penelitian yang dilakukan meliputi uji karakteristik fisik, mekanik, dan
dinamik clay shale (pengujian volumetri gravimetri, batas-batas atterberg, analisa
ayakan, tes suction, tes elemen bender, tes point load, dan uji keausan) terhadap
perubahan kadar air. Persentase penambahan air ditentukan sebesar 20% dari
selisih antara kadar air kondisi jenuh (wsat) dengan kadar air kering lapangan.
Analisa kandungan kimia juga dilakukan pada clay shale di lokasi studi dengan
diffraksi sinar X dan SEM. Hasil analisis mineralogi digunakan sebagai gambaran
awal karakteristik clay shale.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kandungan lempung dalam clay
shale sangat mempengaruhi karakteristik fisik, mekanik, dan dinamik. Jenis
mineral lempung pada clay shale menyebabkan perbedaan karakteristik
penyerapan air dan berat spesifik. Mineral lempung illite dan montmorillonite
pada clay shale mempunyai sifat penyerapan air yang tinggi. Pada saat
pembasahan dari kondisi kering ke kondisi jenuh, terjadi peningkatan angka pori
sebesar 116,73%. Setelah mengalami pembasahan dan pengeringan berulang,
angka pori mengalami kenaikan sebesar 15,47% dari kondisi inisial. Pada akhir
suklus ke-2, tegangan air pori negatif (-Uw) clay shale Tuban turun sebesar
73,95 %. Penurunan tegangan air pori diikuti dengan turunnya parameter dinamik
dan mekanik clay shale. Modulus geser (Gmax) clay shale Tuban mengalami
penurunan sebesar 82,93%. Kuat tekan (qu) clay shale Tuban juga mengalami
penurunan sebesar 70,41% dari kondisi inisial setelah mengalami pengeringan
pembasahan. Besar nilai Kuat tekan (qu) tertinggi diperoleh pada kondisi kering
yaitu sebesar 44,773 kg/cm2. Penurunan kekuatan clay shale disebabkan oleh

rekahan yang terjadi akibat kembang susut dan peralihan parameter dari kategori
batuan menjadi tanah akibat pelapukan.
Rentang perubahan parameter clay shale harus diperhatikan para ahli
geoteknik pada saat menentukan parameter fisik, mekanik, dan dinamik pada
proses perencanaan bangunan diatas lapisan clay shale. Berdasarkan hasil
penelitian, penurunan parameter terjadi signifikan pada saat clay shale mengalami
pembasahan satu kali (1 siklus).

There are some problems happened to the construction on clay shale
affected by some misaccuracies of soil investigation. The parameter isn’t
concerned the change of characteristic due to digging and weathering process on
clay shale. The aim of this research is to find out the changes of water content
effect to the characteristic of clay shale that included physical, mechanical and
dynamic properties within drying and wetting proccess. The clay shale is taken
from mining area of PT. Semen Indo located in Meliwang village, subdistrict of
Kerek, regency of Tuban.
This research includes the examination of water content's influences to the
physic, mechanic and dynamic characteristic of clay shale (volumetri gravimetri
test, atterberg limits, particel size test, suction test, bender element test, point load
test and durability test). The precentage of water adding divined gradually at 20%
of saturated water content differ from air dried condition. The analysis of
chemical contents also done at the research area with x-ray diffraction and
scanning electron microscope test. The chemical analysis result used to show an
initial behaviour of the characteristic of clay shale.
The result of this research shows that the clay content of clay shale has
significant effect on its physical, mechanical, and dynamic characteristics. The
contained of clay mineral in clay shale caused the difference characteristic of the
water absortion based on its spesific surface. The characteristic of Illite and
montmorillonite on clay shale have higher water absorbtion compared to
kaolinite. From air dried to the saturated conditions, the pore number increased
about 116,73%. On the other hand that the clay shale came to high swelling
potential. After drying-wetting cycle aplied, pore number increased 15,47% from
its initial condition. At the end of the second cycle, the negative pore pressure
value (-Uw) of Tuban's clay shale decreased about 73,95%. The decrease of pore
number followed by the reduction of dynamic and mechanic parameter on clay
shale. The dynamic shear modulus of Tuban's clay shale decreased about 82,93%.
The compressive strength (qu) of Tuban's clay shale also decreased about 70,41%
from the initial condition after drying wetting process. The highest undrained
compressive strength (qu) reached at 44,73 kg/cm2 at the dried state.

The decreasing of the clay shale streghtness caused by surface cracking during
shrinking and the shifting of its parameter from rock to soil category due to
weathering.
The great changes of parameter’s range in clay shale must be considered
when the geotechnical experts determine the physical, mechanical, and dynamic
parameters when planning a building construction on it. Based on the result of the
research, the decreasing occured significantly at one drying wetting cycle of clay
shale.
