Abstract

Brake pads is an important component in braking system that worked for slowing down or even stop the vehicle. Generally, there are two basic components of brake pads, asbestos and non-asbestos. Asbestos brake pads only has asbestos itself as the fiber, though asbestos is carcinogenic. Asbestos brake pads can only be maintained in up to 200 oC. As for the non-asbestos brake pads, it has 4 to 5 types of fiber and can be maintained in up to 300 oC.
This research used coconut fiber – epoxy – friction modifier in a form of alumina and magnesium oxide to obtain motorbike brake pads alternative material. This research started with simulation on braking temperature using finite element software, hardness and wear rate test on composite and comparator brake pads using Rockwell and Reciprocating wear tester as the method.
The results of the simulation are composition 1, composition 2 and composition 3 already safe in braking temperature with smallest deformation value is 0.32013 mm in composition 2 and smallest equivalent stress is 54.4 MPa in composition 1. As of the results of hardness test are composition 2 as the highest value is 44.1 HRB, but cannot closed to comparator brake pads hardness value that is 50.4 HRB.
Based on wear rate test, the results are composition 1 and composition 2 have smaller specific wear rate than comparator brake pads, with composition 1 as the smallest wear rate that is 1,73x10-7 cm3/Nm as of comparator brake pads wear rate is 3,1x 10-7 cm3/Nm. From the test it also found that the coefficient of friction from each composition and the biggest coefficient of friction is composition 1 that is 0.46, bigger than comparator brake pads that is 0.40.
