Abstract

Beach damage in the form of coastal abrasion, has been a problem for many coastal areas. Experts have utilized many types of coastal structures such as revetment, groynes and detached breakwaters to solve the problems. This type of building may prevent shoreline abrasion, but generally not considered as environmentally friendly, especially from the point of view of tourism. To overcome the damage to the beach without reducing the aesthetic or natural features of the beach Artificial Reefsare proposed. The role of artificial reefs as fish habitat like coral reefs, can also served as coastal protection structures by reducing the energy of incoming waves the coast. In this experiment the wave transmission of hexagonal shape artificial reefs will be analyzed based on their horizontal configuration.. The tests were conducted in Wave Flume laboratory of Marine Engineering Departement, Faculty of Marine Technology ITS. the results of the experiment show that: (1) the value of the transmission coefficient increases with the decrease of wave steepness, in the contrary, the transmission coefficient decreases with the increase of wave steepness, (2) For regular waves, configuration with the width of 1,1 m and the height of the structure 0,1 m has the lowest transmission coefficient comparing to other configuration, (3) The largest energy reduced during irregular wave test occurs at configuration 4 where the width of 1,09 m m and the height of structure 0,1 m at 0,7 m significant wave height and period of 1,4 seconds with transmission coefficient of 62,46%.
