Abstract

As a promising renewable energy, biogas can help alleviate environmental pollution and energy crises. Biogas purification is one of the key technology in the development stage of biogas utilization. the removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) in biogas can increase its calorific value, in order to meet the compressed natural gas (CNG) standard, as a very important fuel in the future. In this study, the biogas produced from the biogas reactor installation in Dusun Podorejo, Desa Sajen, Kecamatan Pacet, Kabupaten Mojokerto granted from ITS was purified by passing through a solution Ca(OH)2 in bubble column contactor to produce precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC). The effect of biogas flow rate on contact time, PCC quality is experimentally studied. The bubble column (diameter= 7 cm) filled with saturated Ca(OH)2 as high as 20 cm. Biogas is passing through the distributor at a volumetric rate of 0.1-0.5 liter/minute until the solution pH in the bubble column becomes 6-7. the formed PCC is precipitated, filtered and then dried in an oven. Characterization of PCC using XRD shows that between the three crystalline forms (calcite, vaterite, and aragonite), calcite is the most stable. To investigate the effect of methane gas and other gases in biogas on the formation of PCC, pure carbon dioxide gas is used as a benchmark.
