Abstract

HKUST-1 and MCM-41/HKUST-1 composites have been synthesized by solvothermal method at 100 °C for 10 hours, using solvent mixture of dimethylformamide (DMF), ethanol and water with volume ratio of 1:1:1. The amount of MCM-41 added during the synthesis process was varied at 3.5, 7 and 14% toward the mass of HKUST-1, and the obtained composites were notated as MC(3.5)/HKUST-1, MC(7)/HKUST-1 and MC(14)/HKUST-1, respectively. Diffractogram patterns of the obtained solids showed characteristic peaks at 2θ of 6.69, 9.46, 11.61 and 13.41°, similar to that of reported HKUST-1. Furthermore, FTIR spectra of all solids showed absorption bands at the same wavenumbers as reported for HKUST-1. Images from Scanning Electrone Microscope (SEM) showed that surface morphology of HKUST-1 and the composites dominated by octahedral shape. The results of adsorption-desorption N2 showed that specific surface area the composites were lower than that of HKUST-1. The thermal stability of the composites, however, reached 302 °C, higher than that of HKUST-1 (292 °C). Performance of the composites as adsorbent was studied for the removal of methylene blue (MB) and congo red (CR) in aqueous solutions. It was found that the MC(14)/HKUST-1 composite had highest adsorption capacity toward MB (334,82 mg/g) and CR (894,83 mg/g), as well as followed a kinetic adsorption model of pseudo-second order and a Langmuir isotherm adsorption for both adsorbates.
