Abstract

The failure of current protection equipment to detecting electrical fault at low voltage installation became the main cause of fire disaster. Electrical fault that failed to be detected by the protection equipment was an electric arc that appears when a short circuit fault occured. The magnitude of current that sufficient to make sparks and the rapid duration of the fault caused the fire and the failure of the protection equipment to detecting the fault. In this research, smart phone would be used to detecting arcing in low voltage equipment and analysi s the influence of impedance against the performance of protection equipment. Microcontroller would be used as detection method that functionate as sensor and data sender. Microcontroller detected electrical fault by taking sampling of current and transformed by using discrete wavelete transform method which would given high frequency signal output and would be used to analyzing the signal of electrical fault. The methods of data retrieval was divided into three conditions in order to distinguishing electrical fault by the detection equipment. The three of them were normal condition, switching condition, and arcing condition, and then compared the three characteristics of the condition by the difference of load power and the length of impedance. In this research, the result that obtained was the equipment based on smart phone was able to detecting arc fault and impedance variation was not influence the performance of the detection equipment.
