Abstract

Surabaya is the capital city of East Java and one of big city in Indonesia. The high number of economic, industry, and other activities caused the increasing of traffic jam. It’s estimated that the average amount of motor vehicle in Surabaya increase about 17,483 units every month. Motor vehicles produced about 70-83% of air pollution in urban area. This condition is reasonable considering high contribution from transportation sector caused the decreasing air quality. Particulate Matter (PM10) and Total Suspended Particulate (TSP) are pollutants which is sourced from motor vehicles.
In this research, the particulate concentration measurements were carried out using Aerocet 531S Particle Mass Profiler and Counter and the traffic monitoring using CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) recording video in 6 sampling locations at Urip Sumoharjo Street, Diponegoro Street, Mayjend. Sungkono Street, Dr. Mustopo Street, Gemblongan Street and Embong Malang Street. Plants were provided as barrier at point sampling on Diponegoro Street, Embong Malang Street and Dr.Moestopo Street. Continously sampling were done starting at 6 AM until 21 PM on weekday and on weekend (Sunday). Total time required is 180 hours (6 locations x 15 hours x 2 days x 1 repetitions).
Measurements and monitoring of motor vehicles were carried out simultaneously in order to get a representative exposure condition. Multiple linear regression method was used to know the functional correlation between weekday and weekend variable, peak hour and non peak hour, presence and absence of plants on sidewalk, humidity, temperature, wind speed, directions and number of vehicles. CCTV recording video was used to calculate the number of vehicles, and to classify particulate source.
Based on the result of the study, it was found that the average PM10 concentration on workday at the sampling point in Diponegoro Street is 444,256 μg/Nm3, it exceeds the standard of 0.61%; in Dr. Moestopo Street is 440,059 μg/Nm3, it exceeds 1,10%; in Gemblongan Street is 456,542 μg/Nm3, it exceeds 8,3%; whereas the concentration of TSP at all sampling sites doesn’t exceed the quality standard. On weekend, the concentrations of PM10 and TSP throughout the sampling sites does’nt exceed the quality standard. Based on multiple linear regression analysis it was found that PM10 concentration on weekday is 73,468 µg/m3 higher and TSP is 77,808 µg/m3 higher, the absence of plant as barrier at the sidewalk increased the concentration of PM10 16,013 µg/m3 and TSP 8,341 µg/m3.
