Abstract

In the medical world, the use of non - biodegradable materials is still an attractive option in the manufacture of bone implants because in addition to having good mechanical properties, the price is also relatively cheap. However, the use of nonbiodegradable materials has disadvantages one of them is the potential for large toxicity. Therefore, biodegradable materials which can be absorbed and don’t need to be removed from the body are needed as a substitute for non-biodegradable materials. The alloy used in this research was Mg – 5%Zn. However, when it was compared to the biodegradable implant degradation rate criteria, the Mg – 5%Zn alloy was still not eligible. Therefore, an additional process was required to reduce the degradation rate. In this research, polymer was used as layer of Mg – 5%Zn alloy which was added using spray coating method to reduce degradation rate of the alloy. Polycaprolactone (PCL) was used as a coating material with concentrations of 2; 2.5; 3 and 3.5% (w/v). Testing and characterization which applied in this research were XRD test, SEM test, optical microscope test, weight loss test and adhesion test. The results showed that the optimal concentration of polycaprolactone (PCL) coating on Mg - 5Zn alloy was 3.5% (w/v) concentration considering the test results of small porous, ± 100x μm thickness, and degradation rate of 2.19 cm/year. While the best adhesion power was at a concentration of 2% (w/v) with a value of 4B. This research shows that the concentration affects several things: the higher the concentration the smaller the porous size, the more the thickness increases, the lower the degradation rate and the lower the adhesion power.
