Abstract

Industrial growth in East Java continues to increase. In the process of industrial operation is widely used liquid phase is at risk for the formation of foam that infer the negative impact for the industry. The solution of this problem is to add an antifoam. Unfortunately the antifoam that is on the market today is rare because imported products so that have a relatively expensive price and contains surfactants that are difficult to describe in nature. Therefore, an effective and environmentally friendly antifoam is required. One of them is from methyl ester which is widely contained in vegetable oil. Type of vegetable oil that has not been widely used is bintaro oil derived from bintaro seeds. Preparation of methyl esters from vegetable oils is obtained by transesterification reaction. Transesterification reaction usually uses conventional heaters so it takes a long time. Development of the transesterification process is one of them with microwave heating which causes the process to run faster because it can synthesize the pores of the raw materials. In this research, bintaro oil is processed using pressing method. Furthermore, bintaro oil is converted to methyl ester by the innovation of addition of micro-wave as a heater so that it can produce methyl ester in faster time. Furthermore, methyl ester obtained will be tested foam height test to determine the effectiveness of antifoam produced. The research variables used are transesterification method using conventional heating and transesterification using microwave heater at 45, 50, 55, 60 and 65 ° C. From the result of the research, it is found that the best method to produce methyl ester is by transesterification method using microwave heater at 60 ° C transesterification temperature with yield of 87,11%, succeed to decrease foam with percent decrease until 96,49% and speed decrease up to 0.38 cm / s and cost per gram Rp. 632,49 and the optimum dose of methyl ester addition on conventional microwave and transesterification method by 55 ppm.
