Abstract

Onggok is a fiber which is a by product of making starch from cassava. Onggok fiber consists of cellulose and hemicellulose. The high content carbohydrates of onggok is 68,01% which has the potential to developed into bioethanol products. But until now onggok has only been used as a raw material for making compost, animal feed, and sometimes dumped into the rivers because it is considered has low economic value. The purpose of making bioethanol is to utilize the potential of onggok to made into bioethanol through the process of acid hydrolysis and fermentation with an innovation in bioethanol purification technology using fractination distillation.
This research was conducted to determine the effect of ethanol contents which has produced from the concentration of onggok 50 gr/l, 75 gr/l, and 100 gr/l with concentration of HCl 0,5 N, 1 N, and 2 N. Samples from onggok were hydrolyzed using HCl with variations of concentrations 0,5 N, 1 N and 2 N. Hydrolysis solution are filtered until there is no pulp in the solution. The acidic hydrolyzate filter solution is set to pH 4,5 and then fermented for 3 days. The purification process is carried out by fractination distillation to obtain higher ethanol contents.
The results showed that the optimum variable is onggok with concentration variable 100 gr/l with concentration of HCl 2 N. Which is ethanol obtained from fractination distillation is 91,07% (v/v) with yields 29,17%.
