Abstract

================================================================================================
Bulletproof vest has a function to hold penetration and reduce impact energy caused by projectile penetration. Projectile energy is reduced and even stopped by spreading kinetic energy along the width of the protective plate, so that the energy due to the ballistic load of the bullet which is passed on to the user is getting smaller. In fact, the energy received by bulletproof vest users can still cause physical injuries such as bruising, swelling or wound that are quite serious. In addition, the existing bulletproof vest still feels heavy, thereby reducing the mobility of users. From those problems, it is necessary to do research on alternative material of bulletproof vests that have the same relative performance in resisting the impact energy of projectiles.
This study consists of several stages, starting from literature studies, simulations, making test specimens, ballistic testing, and analysis of simulation results compared to the results of ballistic tests. The geometry of ballistic test specimens and bullets using type.30 caliber M2 AP which refers to the National Institute of Justice 0101.06 level IV standard. Ballistic testing which includes penetration criteria, Back Face Signature, and residual energy that may be accepted by users follow the criteria set by NIJ 0101.06 in both simulation and experimental methods. The simulation aims to obtain epoxy-hollow glass microsphere-sisal woven fiber configuration that is able to withstand ballistic tests according to NIJ 0101.06 level IV standards. Test specimens were made based on the best configuration of the simulation results. Furthermore, ballistic test specimens were carried out according to the standard NIJ 0101.06. The test results of the test specimens were analyzed and compared to the simulation results.
In this study, the simulation model of bulletproof vest specimens was able to hold level IV bullets NIJ 0101.06 with a configuration of 30 mm thickness. This configuration is a reference for making bulletproof specimens and being tested according to the standard NIJ 0101.06 with level IV bullets. The test results of bulletproof vest specimens indicate that level IV bullets can penetrate bulletproof vest specimens with epoxy-HGM-sisal woven fiber composite material. This is caused by the presence of void of 26.9% in the bulletproof vest specimen and also the special hardening treatment of the tip of the bullet projectile which cannot be restrained only with composite reinforced natural fibers.
