Abstract

================================================================================================
Secondary settlement in Summarecon City Bandung Area’s Development Project needs to be eliminated along with primary settlement using the preloading method; embankment and vacuum preloading. With embankment preloading method, it is necessary to know the height of the additional embankment (HΔq) which must be added to eliminate secondary settlement. Unlike vacuum preloading method that uses atmospheric pressure as a surcharge load which can cause more soil settlement which is expected to include of secondary settlement. This underlies that vacuum preloading method is estimated to be more effective than embankment preloading method on eliminate secondary settlement. In addition, vacuum preloading method generally only requires embankment materials to reach the planned final elevation (levelling), so that the needs of embankment materials in vacuum preloading is not as much as embankment materials requirement in embankment preloading.
The study in this thesis includes the calculation of the height of the additional embankment (HΔq) that needed to eliminate secondary settlement with a review time of 20 years using embankment preloading method which will be compared with vacuum preloading method along with the estimated cost of each method. This thesis also includes the study about the correlation of soil parameters that needed to calculate secondary settlement, which is the correlation between secondary settlement index (C'α) with pore number (e) and effective consolidation pressure (P') in order to formulate a secondary settlement index. These soil parameters were obtained from laboratory tests using undisturbed samples that taken from the area around the project.
Based on the results of the analysis, the correlation between secondary settlement index (C'α) with pore number (e) and effective consolidation pressure (P') of the soil in this project is not yet strong enough. This is evidenced by the average value of the coefficient of determination (R2) of 0,3319 and the coefficient of correlation (R) of 0,576. The total settlement (primary and secondary) that occurs in this project is quite large, which is 2,9 m. In embankment preloading method, the additional load of embankment (Δq) that needed to eliminate secondary settlement is 1,508 t/m2 which is equivalent to the height of the embankment (HΔq) as high as 0,9 m. With the additional load (Δq), the initial height of the embankment (Hi) that must be placed is 7,2 m. Meanwhile, due to the large settlement of the soil, vacuum preloading method requires a lot of embankment materials to reach the planned final elevation (levelling). This method requires total embankment materials of 5,8 m, which only differs about 1,4 m with the needs of embankment materials in embankment preloading, but the vacuum preloading method is the single most effective way to eliminate secondary settlement along with primary settlement. If viewed from the estimated cost, vacuum preloading has lower estimated cost, which reaches 10,5 billion rupiahs, while embankment preloading method reaches 11,5 billion rupiahs.
