Abstract

Impaired vision is a condition where someone is unable to see clearly, even when they are using glasses and in a condition where there is enough amount of light. Based on data from Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) in 2010, the percentage of citizens aged more than 10 years old in Indonesia who had impaired vision is 3.05%. Reported on the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Conference 2010 in Sydney. With the number above 0.5%, impaired vision in Indonesia is not only become a health problem but has already become a social problem (Kemenkes, Situasi Penglihatan dan Kebutaan, 2014). One of the needs of an individual is the need for education. The need for education can be fulfilled in many ways, one of them is by attending formal education in school and non-formal education. However, people with visual difficulties or visually impaired have differences in how they learn, because in their reading and writing they use braille characters instead of alphabetical characters. Research has been done by EduBraille team to obtain technology that is able to compete with existing braille display refreshable technology with low production costs. However, the device they designed does not have a suitable user interface for visually impaired people and the device has not provided good feedback. Therefore, it is proposed research on the design of enclosures on refreshable braille display devices developed by EduBraille. The method used in this research is a deep interview, shadowing, and the use of an affinity diagram in conducting study and analysis. The proposed concept is user-friendly design, so it is expected that users are able to recognize and use the product easily.
