Abstract

Penyusutan
maksimum diameter sekitar 5,4% yaitu pada penambahan 9,1%
B2O3. Densitas dan porositas komposit diukur dengan prinsip
Archimedes. Nilai porositas komposit tanpa B2O3 sekitar 40% dan
densitasnya 1,7 g/cm3
, Sedangkan pada penambahan 4,8% dan
9,1% B2O3 porositasnya bernilai 20% dan 17%, sedangkan
densitasnya adalah 1,9 g/cm3 dan 1,9 g/cm3
. Koefisien ekspansi
termal (KET) berdasarkan pengujian TMA (Thermo Mechanical
Analyzer) sampel-sampel komposit tersebut bernilai,berturut-turut,
12,0; 9,0; dan 9,3 × 10-6
ppm/°C. ========== Ceramic composites based on natural SiO2 sand and MgO
synthetic powder with addition of B2O3 have been successfully
synthesized. The aim of the addition was to increase density and
decrease porosity, but leaving the other properties remain the
same. Composites were made by mixing Tanah Laut sand powder
and MgO with addition of B2O3 0%; 4,8%; and 9,1% by weight
using a mortar for 30 minutes. The mixed powders were
compacted in the form of cylindrical pellets at a of pressure
4500N after which were sintered at temperature of 1150°C to
form dense ceramic composites. The samples were characterised
for their phase composition using X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD).
The diffraction data were qualitatively analyzed using Match!2
software and quantitatively using Rietica sofware based on
Rietveld method. Sintered sample without B2O3 comprised quartz,
forsterite and enstatite while the B2O3-added samples consisted of
quartz and protoenstatite. The maximum diametric shrinkage was
approximately 5,4% at 9,1% after the addition of B2O3. The
density and porosity of the composites were measured by
Archimedes principle. The porosity and the density of the
composite without B2O3 was approximately 40% and 1,7 g/cm3
.
The addition of B2O3 significantly reduced the porosity up to 20
and 17% for the 4,8% and 9,1% B2O3 samples. The coefficient of
thermal expansion (CTE) of the composites were ranging from
9,0-12,0 × 10-6
ppm/°C.
