Abstract

Ni-Cd (nickel-cadmium) batteries are one type of rechargeable batteries which are widely used in portable electronic applications. The increased production of Ni-Cd batteries also causes an increase in the spent Ni-Cd batteries that are discharged. Spent Ni-Cd batteries contain nickel and cadmium metals that are very dangerous for the environment. On the other hand, the metals contained in spent Ni-Cd batteries are valuable metals that can be reused and have a high economic value, especially nickel. Therefore, it is very important to process spent Ni-Cd batteries to overcome environmental problems and to recover precious metals such as nickel. In general, there are two main processes used to recycle Ni-Cd batteries, namely pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy. As an alternative, hydrometallurgical processing using leaching has been researched and developed in several countries because it is more efficient and does not require large energy. In the leaching process, there are several main factors that affect including temperature, acid concentration, and time. The results of the leaching process will be filtered, then the filtrate and residue will be separated and characterized to determine the chemical composition of the metal in the residue. This review will examine how the effect of temperature, acid concentration, and time in the leaching process of spent Ni-Cd batteries on nickel metal recovery.
