Abstract

Progress in science and technology has advance the method and knowledge in designing ship’s hull. Fast ship requires a well thought and fair hull so that it could operate efficiently and one of the ways to reach good efficiency is by using step on the ship’s hull. Step on a hull is a sharp discontiunity that is located on the bottom surface of the hull. Currently, the use of stepped hull by designers are generally used on planing monohulls, although the design development of catamaran ships with stepped hull are growing more popular by designers. Analysis on the resistance of catamaran hull with transversed stepped hull has been very limited in research. This final project aims to understand the effect of the use of stepped hull on catamaran on ship resistance. The resistance analysis on this final project uses numerical simulation by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). In the simulation, the influence of step on ship resistance is analyzed on monohull and catamaran configuration with round bilge hull model type. The catamaran models is tested with a separation ratio (S/L) of 0.3. Speed variation is done on each model tested with Froude Number (Fr) values 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and 0.7. Validation is done by using the result of towing tank result on the models without stepped hull. From the simulation results obtained the resistance value, wetted surface area, pressure on the model, and the wave pattern generated by the model. From the simulation result it is inferred that the CFD results have good agreement with the experimental results with the difference according to the criteria of below 5%. Comparison results between the model with and without stepped hull has found that the monohull model with stepped hull has a lower value of CT and RT/Δ on Fr 0.2 – 0.3, and a higher value CT and RT/Δ on Fr 0.4 – 0.7, and also the catamaran model with stepped hull has a lower value of CT on Fr 0.2, and a higher value of CT on Fr 0.3 – 0.7 and RT/Δ on Fr 0.2 – 0.7.
