Abstract

The magnesium alloy applied to human bones is Mg AZ31B. This alloy is widely used for biomedical applications due to its less aluminum content but its mechanical and corrosion properties are good and it is possible for implant application inside human bones. The method used is plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process. The purpose of this study was to analyze the composition of hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate in PEO process on morphology and degredation rate of Mg AZ31B alloy used with electrolyte solution Na2SiO3 (2,5g/l) + KOH(2g/l). Percentage comparison variation (%) composition mass of dissolved hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate is 70:30, 50:50, 40:60, and 60:40. For testing the rate of degradation using the weight loss and polarization test. Characterization of the resulting coating used XRD and SEM-EDX. From XRD analysis, it was found that the content of MgO and Mg2SiO4. Then the results of the analysis using the weight loss and polarization methods. The results of the polarization test and weight loss test, the optimum time was obtained at variation 70:30 of 0,22 mpy and 0,29 mpy with an average pore size of 0,036 μm.
