Abstract

Epilepsy is the second most common serious nervous system disease after
stroke. The development of an automatic algorithm to classify multi-class epileptic
seizure types is needed to overcome this problem. Classification using CNN, which
has been commonly used, can still be developed further related to performance and
computational costs. Recent research proposes an architecture called Batch
Normalization Neural Network (BN3
) to solve problems in standard CNN. Other
research proposes an architecture called Adaptive Batch Normalization (AdaBN),
a simple but effective architecture. AdaBN itself has a weakness in terms of speed
for large data. BN3
itself is fast when there are large amounts of data. However, it
lacks accuracy, and AdaBN is effective but slow for large amounts of data.
Therefore, this study proposes a new epileptic seizure detection architecture
called the Modified Batch Normalization Neural Network (MBN3
), which
combines BN3
and AdaBN to detect multi-class epileptic seizures quickly and
effectively. The raw EEG signal is first chopped up, then passed through a bandpass
filter. Oversampling and undersampling techniques are used to produce a balanced
sample from the training and testing set. The signal is then continued to the
smoothing process using Haar Wavelet, and converted into image like data to be
trained using MBN3
. After that, the testing process is carried out, which output is
the epileptic seizure class's classification results. The performance of the
classification results will use the number of iteration, accuracy, precision, and
recall. The performance of the classification using the MBN3
architecture will then
be compared with the CNN, AdaBN, and BN3
architectures' performances.
The test results found that the classification using the MBN3
architecture
requires an average iteration to form a model is 39224 iterations, with the fastest
iteration time of 37189 iterations. The MBN3
architecture's performance has an
4
average accuracy of 64,513%, an average precision of 64,637%, and an average
recall of 67,092%, with the highest accuracy of 66,196%, the highest precision of
66,075%, and the highest recall of 68,200%. The MBN3 architecture has the fastest
average iteration time compared to the two other architectures, which is 3.17%
faster than the BN3
architecture, 25,367% faster than the CNN architecture, and
8,321% slower than AdaBN architecture. Meanwhile, the MBN3
architecture
differs by 1-4% for accuracy, precision, and recall from BN3
and CNN
architectures, and 1-30% better than AdaBN architecture.
