Abstract

One of the tools to assist in implementing lean is the lean assessment matrix (LAM). This tool helps map waste by type and root of waste, determines the root of waste and recommends actions to reduce or eliminate root waste. LAM consists of two matrices. LAM 1 is used to get priority types of waste and the root causes of waste. Waste priority is carried out after conducting an assessment that considers severity, occurrence, relation value between waste and impact value. In the original version of LAM 1, use the Waste relationship matrix (WRM) to get the value of the relationship between wastes. The drawbacks of the WRM tool are the large number of questions used and the conversion of values that have no basis when measuring the value of the waste relations, so it is not easy for respondents to get the value of the waste relations practically in the company. In addition, other deficiencies in LAM 1 also occur in severity which sees the impact of waste based solely on the magnitude of the impact or from the amount of cost loss that must be incurred by the company, even though not all impacts can be measured. Thus, modifications to the LAM 1 tool are used to (1) make it easier for respondents to determine the value of the waste relationship by adopting the Decision Making Trial And Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) and (2) measuring the impact of waste on the achievement of the company's Key Performance Indicator (KPI). The implementation of modification of Lean Assessment Matrix (LAM) 1 in the first case study resulted in a priority rank of waste, namely the types of waste defects (W3, W2, W4) and waste overprocessing (W16 and W15). Whereas in the second case study, the priority rank of waste is obtained, namely the types of waste overproduction (W4), waste defects (W2), waste waiting (W5 and W7), and waste transportation (W9). The result of the modification of the LAM tool that is carried out can help the company to determine critical waste more easily and in line with the company's strategy.
