Abstract

Microplastic (MPs) is the smallest part of plastic that had been degraded through degradation process and having potential to be ingested by marine organism in the process of food foraging. The presence of MPs in the flesh of fish would have harmful effects on both the fish and human who consume it. This study purposed to identify the characteristics of MPs within the muscle of a pelagic fish, the Narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) as well as in demersal species, the Red snapper (Lutjanus malabaricus) collected from PPN Brondong, Lamongan. Observed visual characteristics including the shape, color, size and abundance of the MPs while polymer type was tested using FTIR. A Mann-Whitney test (α = 0,05) was performed to test the difference of MPs abundance in both species. There are 301 particles counted and averaged abundance of MPs in S. commerson is relatively higher than in L. malabaricus. The shape dominated by fiber compared to fragment and pellet; the most common size is 100-500µm whilst the most common color is black, followed by red, blue, yellow, green and transparent. Chemically, cellophane is the most dominant polymer type of the MPs.
