Abstract

The use of gas turbines has been widely used, and one of the examples is to produce electricity. Gas power plants apply the Brayton cycle in their operation. In the operation, there are many factors that can affect the performance of the gas turbine system, one of the examples is the ambient air temperature. As the air temperature increases, the air density will decrease, which resulting a decrease in the air mass flow rate. The reduced air mass flow rate causes the air that passing through the gas turbine become smaller and lowers the performance of the gas turbine. One of the ways that can be done to increase the performance of the gas turbine system is with inlet air cooling method. There are several types of inlet air cooling methods, namely wet evaporative media, fogging cooling, and mechanical chiller (water chiller). This inlet air cooling methods is expected to improve the performance of the gas turbine system.
This research was conducted using software Cycle Tempo 5.0 to simulate the effect of inlet air cooling on the performance of the gas turbine system. There are three types of inlet air cooling that is being compared in this reseach, namely wet evaporative media, fogging cooling, and mechanical chiller (water chiller). Ambient air temperature was varied according to the average weather data for the Gresik area at 06.00, 12.00, and 18.00 WIB. Simulations are carried out on the three cooling systems with the modelling that has been made in Cycle Tempo 5.0 with predetermined data.
The final result that is expected from this research is the performance of the three types of air cooling to reduce ambient air temperature, auxiliary consumption, and the effect of the three methods on the performance of the generator system with a gas turbine that is applied to each of the air cooling systems. From the result of the comparison, the air cooling method that is appropriate for use in PLTG will be obtained.
From the results of the analysis, it is found that the gas turbine compressor inlet air cooling system can improve the performance of gas turbine. From the simulation results on temperature variations, can be found an increase in power output and average efficiency for 3.72% and 1.029% for wet evaporative media, 4.46% and 1.22% for fogging and 7.8% and 2.07% for mechanical chiller (water chiller). A mechanical chiller cooling system is obtained which is suitable for use in PLTGU PJB UP Gresik block 1 to increase gas turbine performance. With the influence of auxiliary consumption, an increase still happened in output power and efficiency of 2.07% and 0.84%.
