Abstract

Body armor uses metal materials that have high strength, but the weight of the material is heavy. In the development of body armor, composite materials are the material of choice because of their strong and light properties. The composite material consists of two constituent materials, namely the matrix in the form of epoxy and the reinforcement in the form of carbon fiber. Carbon fiber composites with high strength can be improved by adding particle reinforcement in the form of silicon carbide (SiC). This study aims to analyze the effect of silicon carbide particles on the morphology and mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites as a body armor application. Composition of SiC particles were 0, 4, 8, 12, and 16 wt% with the tests carried out namely SEM, FTIR, tensile strength, hardness, density, and firing. The results showed that SiC particles affect morphology and improve mechanical properties. The optimum results occur in the composition of 12 wt% SiC with a tensile strength value of 336.87 MPa, Young's modulus 3.48 GPa, elongation 16.09%, hardness 81 HD and a density of 1.31 gr/cm3. The material meets the NIJ level IIA firing test standards.
