Abstract

Many physicochemical factors such as chemical and phase composition, particle size, Si and Al solubility from Fly ash, were commonly considered as affecting the properties of the resulted geopolymer pastes. However, the geopolymer pastes were made with different recipes that make it difficult to make a solid conclusion about which factor is dominant in the synthesis of geopolymer pastes using Fly ash as raw materials. This study reports on geopolymer pastes prepared with the same recipe from twenty-two steam power plants. The geopolymer paste was made with a composition ratio of S/L = 3.6, SiO2/Al2O3 = 3.6, Na2O/SiO2 = 0.23, Na2O/Al2O3 = 1.59, and H2O/Na2O = 7.80. XRF analysis showed that six samples were belonging to class C Fly ash, while the rest belonged to class F. The results of the XRD analysis showed that there were typical peaks of quartz and mullite in all fly ash samples. The mineral phases of calcite, hematite, and magnetite were also found in fly ash. SEM analysis showed that most of the fly ash had a spherical or spherical-shaped morphology with different particle sizes. On the other hand, five fly ash showed irregular morphology. The highest compressive strength of 54.94 MPa was measured on the geopolymers of Fly ash AL6 at the age of 28 days after curing. The results show that among many factors, particle morphology and size play the most important roles in geopolymerization. Fly ashes with spherical morphology and smaller particle size were easily converted into geopolymers. Silicate and aluminate ions were dissolved easier from Fly ash particles with spherical morphology and smaller particle size.
