Abstract

Phenol is a type of organic compound that is often found in industrial waste in Indonesia. Phenol is very dangerous because it can pollute the environment and at certain concentrations can cause problems with human health and death in other organisms. Chemical and biological processing of feool waste has not shown a good level of removal. Therefore, research is needed regarding the tertiary processing of phenol waste with aquatic plants in order to reduce the toxic effects of waste water so that it becomes safe for the environment. In this research, phenolic water waste from PT XYZ and artificial phenolic waste were used. The aquatic plant used is water hyacinth (Eichhorniae crassipes). As a comparison, a control was used in the form of phenol waste which was not planted with water hyacinth. The largest concentration of phenol in phenolic water waste occurred at a concentration of 6.41 mg/1 with an efficiency of 94.54%. Meanwhile, for artificial phenol waste, the greatest removal efficiency also occurred at a concentration of 6.41 mg/1, namely 97.74%. In this study it was discovered that the role of water hyacinth in phenol removal was very small. This can be seen from the small difference in removal efficiency between the test reactor and the control reactor. The difference in removal efficiency for phenolic water waste is 0.16% while for artificial phenol it is 1.32%. Due to artificial phenol waste, the removal efficiency of the control reactor was greater than that of the test reactor
