Abstract

Wastewater containing phenol (B-3 waste) requires special treatment before being discharged into water bodies. Physical, chemical and biological processing is not yet effective and efficient, so tertiary processing using phytoremediation using apu wood (Pistia stratiotes) is needed. This research aims to determine the maximum concentration of phenol that can be reduced by the apu wood bioreactor system. Another objective is to analyze and compare the ability of the apu wood bioreactor system to reduce the concentration of phenol and cod in industrial phenolic water waste and artificial phenolic waste. In this study, two types of waste were used, namely phenolic water industrial waste and phenolic butane waste with variations in phenol concentration of 2.14 mg!L, 1.07 mg/L and 0.53 mg/L. This research used a duplicate test reactor, a control reactor without apu wood and a control reactor without the addition of waste. This research used a batch system for 30 days. The research results showed that the efficiency of the apu wood bioreactor system in removing phenol and COD concentrations in phenolic water industrial waste test reactors ranged between 79.32% - 94.88% and 31.82% - 72.92%. The efficiency of the apu wood bioreactor system in removing phenol and COD concentrations in the artificial phenol waste test reactor ranged between 79.32 % ~ 95.58 % and 45.83 % ~ 63.64 %. Meanwhile, the phenol concentration removal result in artificial waste was 2.14 mg/L by evaporation without microorganism activity of 62.09% for 6 days. This shows that the apu wood reactor does not have significant phenol removal capabilities
