Abstract

The learning of Javanese characters among 5th-grade elementary school students is crucial as it represents a cultural and traditional heritage of Indonesia. Many students face difficulties in recognizing and distinguishing the characters of the Javanese script, which is often due to unengaging learning media. To address this issue, this research aims to develop the educational game JELAJA (Explore Javanese Characters), which not only motivates students to learn but also provides an enjoyable learning experience of Javanese characters by implementing the Core Unpredictability & Curiosity approach. This approach aims to enhance students' interest and motivation by adding unpredictable elements such as randomized answer choices and varied activities like assigning diverse missions to stimulate students’ curiosity. The development of the educational game includes analysis, design, implementation, and testing phases. The evaluation of this game is carried out through manual functional testing and assessment using a Likert scale to measure the success of the applied core. The test results showed a score of 62.25 and in the normalized scale (1-100), a score of 89 was obtained., indicating that the game successfully created an enjoyable learning experience and motivated students to further explore the Javanese characters by applying the Core Unpredictability & Curiosity. Thus, this educational game serves not only as a learning aid but also as a solution to preserve the cultural heritage of the Javanese characters.
