Abstract

Coffee is an important commodity that plays a strategic role in Indonesia's economy, especially in East Java Province, which is one of the largest coffee-producing regions but still faces challenges in optimizing added value within the value chain flow. Therefore, this research employs a case study approach to comprehensively understand the value chain in the coffee industry in East Java Province, including its roles, challenges, and opportunities. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 14 selected stakeholders involved in the value chain of the coffee industry in three coffee-producing regencies in East Java: Jember, Lumajang, and Malang. The sampling technique used in this research is snowball sampling. The findings of this research show that Jember Regency and Malang Regency have advantages, both in primary activities and supporting activities within the coffee industry flow, compared to Lumajang Regency. The coffee industry in Lumajang Regency is still lagging due to various factors, such as cultivation systems that do not comply with standards, inadequate marketing, and coffee commodities losing popularity to other commodities. The research also found that the closer the actors are to the downstream side, the greater the margin they receive. This research indicates that the coffee industry still has opportunities to optimize value addition, such as the advantageous geographical conditions that can help the industry grow. However, it also faces challenges such as low supply and production capacity.
