Abstract

Geopolymer mortar is composed of geopolymer material that functions to replace cement paste. The main raw material of geopolymer is material containing silica (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3) such as fly ash, GGBFS (ground granulated blast furnace slag). However, on average these materials do not have the ability to adsorb methylene blue, therefore the addition of Metakaolin is needed to help the mortar's ability to adsorb methylene blue. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding Metakaolin on the compressive strength and adsorption capacity of methylene blue geopolymer mortar based on fly ash and GGBFS. With the right ratio of fly ash, GGBFS, metakaolin and alkali solution according to the mix design, it is expected to increase the compressive strength and adsorption capacity of methylene blue waste in geopolymer mortar1. Characterization tests carried out in this study include XRF, FTIR, XRD, SEMEDX, and BET tests. Then, the resulting mortar was tested for mortar density, water absorption, compressive strength, methylene blue adsorption, and UV-Vis. From the research results, the mortar density value based on ASTM C905 decreased along with the increasing percentage of metakaolin addition and decreasing percentage of GGBFS addition, with the maximum value obtained in the F70G25M5 variation of 2.41834 g/cm3. The water absorption value of mortar based on ASTM C1403 has a maximum value in the F70G5M25 variation of 20.8-34.8 g/100 cm2. The compressive strength of mortar is directly proportional to the density value, with the maximum value obtained in the F70G25M5 variation of 50.37 MPa. The percentage of mass increase after adsorption of methylene blue waste has a value that is inversely proportional to the compressive strength and density values, with the maximum removal efficiency value obtained in the F70G5M25 variation of 73.80095%.
