Abstract

In the 1980s, many train stations in Lumajang were closed due to urban development that often sacrificed the railway tracks. Currently, several stations on the city's outskirts are being reactivated, including the old Lumajang Station, planned for reactivation through Regional Regulation No. 2 of 2013. This station site connects regional stations within the city but faces significant challenges due to major alterations to its building elements and the removal of some parts. The eastern facade, covered by shops, almost obliterates the station's original identity.
This work aims to explore the concept of hybrid architecture to redesign the transport hub in Lumajang. The hybrid concept is expected to combine historical value and modernity, resulting in an adaptive design rich in historical significance. The design integrates two main zones: the station as a representation of the past and the terminal as a reflection of Lumajang's future as a tourist city. These zones are connected through a tourism hub housing a Public Food Center, replacing the primary activities currently taking place on the site.
The design is adaptive to the existing Lumajang Old Station building and integrates well with the railway tracks located in the site's center. The station's facade retains a monotonous and repetitive style with a dominance of square shapes made of wood, adapting to the existing building. The terminal facade on the west side is designed magnificently to reflect Lumajang's progress in the tourism sector. The five main circulations—car lanes, pedestrian paths, motorcycle lanes, railway tracks, and Transmeru bus lanes—are integrated at different levels to avoid crossings. The interior is renovated with tropical ornaments and water elements that reflect Lumajang's natural features, such as Tumpak Sewu waterfall. The exterior facade uses wooden panels as sun shading and adds a sense of privacy, maintaining the original appearance of the existing building.
