Abstract

Child Independent Mobility (CIM) plays an important role in children's development. However, only a few Indonesian children engage in independent mobility. This is due to the lack of adequate child-friendly public facilities and the lack of parental trust in children's safety and comfort. In response to CIM issues, the design is aimed at the journey exploration of children aged 6-12 years, located in Utan Kayu Utara Urban Village, East Jakarta. The design approach is behavioral architecture, in which the environment acts as a stimulus for children's exploration. The design object is a play area with various activities that can improve their independence skills. The design is viewed in two main categories: neighborhood interventions and building interventions. Neighborhood intervention focuses on how design objects can be significant within the neighborhood and shape children’s spatial cognition according to wayfinding theory. This intervention uses the narrative method, where the narrative involves designing stop-off points on children home-school journey while providing places for children to fulfill their play and learning needs. Building intervention focuses on designing spaces that can stimulate children’s imagination and exploration using the affordance approach. The supporting principles in this design are gestalt principles and child-friendly principles. The application in neighborhood intervention utilizes the color red and curved shapes as the identity of these stop-off points. In building intervention, the design focuses on providing spaces that fit the play program, such as a playhouse, imaginative play, nature play, texture play, art station, and workshop, which are planned based on the developmental needs of children in terms of independence. Interior elements are also designed from a variety of activities and made with minimal boundaries so that they can be used imaginatively by children.
