Abstract

Climate change is an important topic to discuss. Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member countries are one of the regions that are vulnerable to climate change due to high exposure and low adaptive capacity. This study aims to determine the effect of the Paris Agreement on the economies of two groups of high- and low-income APEC economies, considering the effect of carbon emissions, exports, imports, and population on APEC economies. The data used in this study were obtained from the Organization for Economic Co- operation and Development (OECD) and the World Bank during the 2011-2020 period. Data analysis was conducted using panel data analysis techniques. The results show that simultaneously, carbon emissions, exports, imports, population, and ratification of the Paris Agreement have a significant effect on the economy for both groups. Partially, this empirical study found that Paris Agreement ratification has a positive but insignificant effect for both groups. Carbon emissions, exports, and imports have a significant effect on the high-income country group, while population is insignificant. In contrast, carbon emissions, exports and imports show a positive but insignificant effect on the low-income country group, while population has a significant effect. These findings can serve as input for APEC to continue to encourage the energy transition while considering the economic conditions of APEC economies.
