Abstract

The Tegal Besar Water Treatment Plant of PDAM Tirta Pandalungan Jember provides clean water for the people of Jember. Tegal Besar Water Treatment Plant takes water from Bedadung River as raw water. Bedadung River water quality has decreased due to plastic waste disposal into the river. Large plastic can be degraded into microplastics. This study aims to calculate the abundance and identify the characteristics of microplastics in water and sludge from the Tegal Besar Water Treatment Plant and evaluate the removal of microplastics in the coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation unit, filtration unit, and disinfection unit of the Tegal Besar Water Treatment Plant of PDAM Jember. This study was conducted on water and sludge from the Tegal Besar Water Treatment Plant operating units consisting of the intake unit, flocculation unit inlet, sedimentation unit outlet, filtration unit outlet, reservoir unit inlet, backwash sludge channel, and sedimentation sludge channel. Sampling was conducted using location composite and time composite methods. Extraction of microplastic samples using hydrogen peroxide and NaCl solution. Microplastic particles were manually separated, observed, and sorted using a digital microscope to analyze the abundance and characteristics of microplastics. The polymer type of microplastics was determined by FTIR. The abundance of microplastics in the raw water of the Tegal Besar Water Treatment Plant of the Jember Regency PDAM was 10-17 particles/L and decreased due to treatment in the coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation unit, filtration unit, and disinfection unit to 4-5 particles/L in production water with a total microplastic removal efficiency of 60-70.6%. Meanwhile, in the backwash sludge, microplastics were found to be 4-12 particles/L and in the sedimentation sludge, microplastics were found to be 5-10 particles/L. The characteristics of microplastics observed are shape, color, and size. The shape of microplastics in both raw water, treated water, and sludge from the Tegal Besar Water Treatment Plant is dominated by filaments/fiber as much as 50-86%. The most common color of microplastics is black at 60-86%. While the size of microplastics in water and sludge is dominated by the size of 51 μm100 μm by 23-100%. The types of microplastics found were all LDPE or Low Density Polyethylene
