Abstract

Steel as the main material for offshore buildings is susceptible to corrosion in the marine environment. Corrosion is defined as the damage or degradation of a material caused by a reaction between the material and its environment. Corrosion control methods can be carried out by applying an effective layer of paint or coating to reduce the spread of corrosion and increase the life of offshore buildings. The success of a strong coating is influenced by the preparation of the surface where the sandblasting process is carried out. This process aims to clean the surface and form a roughness profile of the steel surface by firing an abrasive material so that the paint can adhere firmly. Abrasive materials that are often used are only disposable. This study aims to determine the effect of new and used abrasive materials on paint adhesion and corrosion rate in a seawater environment using ASTM A36 low carbon steel. The steel material will be blasted and an epoxy primer coating will be applied. The abrasive materials used are steel grit G40 and steel shot S330 with varying compositions of mixtures of new and used abrasive materials with the composition Grit:Shot (60:40), Grit:Shot: Used (55:35:10), Grit: Shot: Used (50:30:20), and Grit:Shot: Used (45:25:30). The results showed that the highest surface roughness was obtained from a mixture of new abrasive materials, steel grit and steel shot (60:40) with a value of 53.11 m. In testing the adhesive strength of the paint, the highest adhesion value was obtained from a mixture of new abrasive materials, steel grit and steel shot (60:40) with a value of 11.19 MPa. Meanwhile, in the corrosion rate test, the smallest value was obtained from a mixture of new abrasive materials, steel grit and steel shot (60:40), which was 0.0010850 mm/y. The use of new abrasive materials results in a high quality coating. However, to reduce the use of new abrasive materials, 10% of used abrasive materials can be added which will provide a coating quality close to the use of new abrasive materials.
